about

Quick, how many musical careers can you think of that began with the phrase "Daddy, get me a record deal?"

Probably more than anyone would care to admit. And while Donna Fortunata's family ties continue to be linked to several organized crime underbosses, no one at Onus Records was about to bring that up at her almost immediate signing party at CEO Tommy Globbots house, when Donna's brother Sully "The Compactor" Fortunata stood over Tommy's mom and menacingly told her he liked the cut of her jib while he picked dirt out from under his fingernails with a switchblade.

At Donna's first recording session for Onus (her mercifully unreleased rendition of the old Neapolitan favorite "Funiculì, Funiculà") it was determined by the production staff that Donna had a voice like a crow with someone else's cheese in its beak. Given brother Sully's imperative to "Do something about it," producer Don Glasser sweetened up her voice with session vocalists and this track about a woman who gets everything she's ever wanted was completed in short order.

As for the cover of her first digital single, she insisted on using the idealized portrait of her done by a Coney Island boardwalk artist who made her look like less like Donna and more like Madonna, That portrait was also done with a menacing and overprotective Sully standing close by.

As well as being Donna's maiden offering for Onus, "What's One More Soul 2 the Devil?" marks the first Onus production work by Glasser, who quickly earned the nickname of "The Phantom" for his uncanny ability to disappear in the middle of a session whenever it was time to pay the sandwich delivery boy.

What's One More Soul 2 the Devil?
written by Serene Dominic

Ever since I was a young adult
I'm been interested in the occult
The usual voodoo, the black arts and such
I weighed the pros and cons of this bargaIn for months

All it cost was a soul I never had
Having all I ever wanted wasn't so bad
People ask me if I used a broker
They're clawing just to compete on this level
If you're wondering who you have to blow
Aw honey what's one more soul to the devil?

Now that I live like some demigod
I don't care if they believe me or not
All it took was his cold dead hand in mine
We'll talk again at the end of my natural time

All it cost was a soul I never had
Having all I ever wanted wasn't so bad
People ask me if I have an agent
They're scratching just for a seat at the table
If you're asking if I found the loophole
Aw honey what's one more soul to the devil?

I hope you're here for yourselves
You can still repent and ask your Jesus for help
If there's world lust
I've got it in spades
I've never known a god that ever forgave just forbade

Everybody's green with envy
Struggling to get out of the hole
Sure there's safety in numbers
But what's one more soul to the devil?
What's one more soul to the devil?
What's one more soul to the devil?

People wonder when did I get so clever?
I got a name that is living for ever
Living a charmed life
Waiting for that old fool to die
